Air Compressor – Everything You Need To Know

An air compressor is a device that converts power produced from an electrical, gas or diesel engine to compressed air that is released in quick bursts. Air compressors are used to run pneumatic tools, hobby and craft tools, car repair and industrial and construction applications. There are two main questions to ask in order to determine the type and size of the compressor needed to do the job:

1. Purpose Determines CFM, PSI and Tank Size:

Knowing how an air compressor will be used is the most important question to answer because of its many uses. A compressor used in the home for hobbies or filling tires, balls, kiddie pools and other things around the house will require a small, portable model while a compressor used in manufacturing facilities is much more powerful and may be stationary.

The main purpose for compressors used in the home is to run pneumatic tools. These tools are more powerful, lighter in weight and will last longer than electric tools. The pneumatic tool’s air flow requirements are measured in cubic feet per minute (CFM). Nail guns and staple guns require less CFM than grinders and sprayers.

To determine the size of the compressor needed, add up the total CFM of all the pneumatic tools to be used at the same time and multiply that number by 20 percent. The compressor should deliver more CFM than what’s required.

While most pneumatic tools operate at 90 PSI (pound per square inch), some operate at a lower level PSI while others such as a sander or polisher operate at higher levels. Determine the highest PSI tool used and choose the compressor accordingly.

Tank size will determine how long the compressor can run without depleting the air. Tank size is commonly listed in gallons. If the compressor is used for only short bursts, a six gallon tank is sufficient. For longer, more concentrated usage, a 7 – 30 gallon tank is appropriate. For tools used for longer periods of time such as sanders, an even larger tank of 30 – 60 gallons is needed.

2. Power Source

Choosing a compressor powered by electricity will limit its portability since an electrical source is necessary. Electric air compressors are best used at home in a garage or workshop. Smaller compressors with less than a 30 gallon tank generally run on a home’s 120 volt, 15 amp source of power. Any compressor larger than 30 gallons needs more power to operate, or a 240 volt, single-phase power source.

A compressor powered by gasoline or diesel fuel can be used anywhere which makes this type of compressor suitable for construction and other outdoor use.

Quite often I find myself faced with the opportunity to bet with my spouse that I am right about something and she is wrong. However, mostly I do not because I can’t think of what the winner will get as a prize for victory, or what the loser might be subjected to in the face of defeat. But as it happens we are currently trying to bring our home up to date, and make it sparkle like new. So, this means flipping our Sealy mattresses, replacing discoloured rugs, waxing floors, eliminating cobwebs, touching up indoor paint, and finally putting something in that extra bedroom.

I of course do not want to evade my contribution in this process, but am particularly fond of certain tasks, and abhorrent of others. Thus, when the wifey disagreed with me about the time that our local market opened, and I was absolutely confident that I was right I pounced at my chance to lay down a bet. Basically, what I wanted was to be able to handle the purchases for, and the set up of the extra bedroom. After all I am the Cool Home Shop guy, so I ask you who better for the job? But, she makes a good point that it is the more enjoyable of the long list of tasks to be completed. Thus, I was unwilling to appear unsympathetic, or unjust by opting out of what I deem to be the house cleaning, and horrible busy work, unless there was another way to escape it. The bet was my answer, my salvation if she would only be willing to take the bait and stand behind her claim. Honestly, there was really no doubt that she would because she is not only highly competitive, but sounded so sure in her belief that the store opened its doors at 8 am. And why shouldn’t she be, considering she does the majority of the trips to the grocery. It was like a golden ticket, and I was grabbing it.

Turns out, she did in fact take that bait hook, line, and sinker as they say. The outcome was that I was exempt from window washing, shower descaling and grouting and a lot of other yucky chores. What I got was the ability to design a guestroom all by myself. My choice of Silentnight Oberon Mattress, Chicago black leather bed, and matching check print recliner all were accepted without a peep. The only thing that was controverted were the window treatments I selected, and that was fair enough considering we already had some in the attic, that though basically uninspired work just fine in the space. Now I can clearly see the appeal of gambling.

It may have taken us several months, but we finally purchased a wine rack. My husband, Dan, and I went back and forth over whether we should get it in stainless steel or wood, and if it should be a rack or a cart. Being a man, and the lazier of the sexes he was the proponent of the cart. The idea of wheeling the cart out to our guests, with a cheese tray, fruit and a bowl of nuts on top really seemed to float his boat. I on the other hand felt that the stationary rack was much more sensible as it could hold more wine.

We ended up compromising on a stainless steel rack. It adds a much appreciated bit of shine to our open kitchen plan, and better yet can hold twenty five bottles, as opposed to the ten the cart could house. Now, we are faced with another challenge, we are on a quest to find some decent wine deals. Much like our taste in furniture, Dan and I appreciate different types of wines. So, we have to keep a variety of bottles in order to make both of us happy. Of course there are many things worse than having a good collection of wine in the house.

Often the trends in the clothing fashion industry are echoed in the home décor realm too. This often proves to be a great thing, but this season it might not have everyone rejoicing. This is all because one hot trend for 2010 is neon. Neon is one of those things that people either love or deplore, rarely is there an in between. Think about selecting one shade of neon green or pink and sticking with that alone. To combine, or mix and match can lead to a cheapened look. So, head over to your beloved shop of interest and ask a salesperson if they have such pre-scheduled sales. This could turn out to be one hell of a lucky day for you. I know that my fave clothing store has humungous sales 2 times a year. I have gotten jeans that were originally 130 pound for 30. I think it goes with out saying that got several pair. I never miss their sales, and basically never go into the establishment at any other time during the year because now that just seems foolish.
