Ever since I attended a fair as a child and there was an artist making them, I have been interested in silhouettes. I had just enough money on me to get one done, and I was elated with not only the final product but the chance to see the artist in action as she made it for me. No kidding, it took her under five minutes, and honestly it was obviously a replica of my profile. The distinguishing features had all be captured, it had my upturned nose, my perky ponytail, and even eyelashes. As I write about it now I have a smile on my face remembering the wonderment it prompted in me.

I have often pondered what happened to that construction paper cut out image of me. I probably wore it out by carrying it around with me in my teensy pockets, or it became faded from being left in direct sunlight to the point my mom thought it was time to be discarded. Even without the actual original silhouette art in my possession to remind me of its simple beauty I have carried the image with me in the back of my mind. Carrying around a very good intention to learn the craft myself.

Last week I was in the art section of a bookstore and happened upon a book on the subject. It not only showed you step by step how the magic is done, it included a great deal of pretty paper to make the silhouette out of and the decorative paper to affix it to. Naturally, I saw it as a sign to finally learn how to do it for myself. I have been mesmerised by it ever since, and unlike a magic trick, knowing how it is done did not make it less special.

I have taken photos of family members that have been taken from the correct angle and used them to make wonderful silhouettes. I will be compiling a family tree with them and making wall art for our hallway with it. I am like a small child again, and can’t wait till I can hang the art up and see it in all of its glory for the first time.

There are tons of inspirational materials out there, and I can see myself getting carried away with this new decoration. Just hope everyone else likes it as much as I do, since they will be getting their own for Christmas later this year. For those of you not interested in making the artwork yourself there is a resurgence of it in the works, and premade versions are readily available.

The first time I came across the virtuous cake pop was in a Starbucks. The idea of a little ball of cake surrounded by icing, or chocolate, or whatever was displayed that day was fantastic. And, after I bought myself one and sank my teeth into it, I took a second to realise how much the kids would like them too. However, at the time they were so novel, I thought I would never have a chance to make them at home, and at the prices Starbucks was selling them, I would have to keep them a secret from the kiddies for as long as I could.

Of course, it was beyond my control, and they learned all about the cake pop from friends at school. And it of course was not that I wanted to deprive them, but really and truly, they were really expensive at the coffee shop, too expensive for what you got. Thankfully, I don’t have to feel guilty about avoiding bringing the kids to Starbucks now, and having had one of their pops myself. The cake pop makers are now available in stores.

I got one as soon as I heard that, and have not only been making them for the whole family, but they are now my go to item. When I have to do something for a bake sale, I make the pops, when I have to bring snack for my child’s class, I make the pops. When we have a birthday party, I make the pops. I love the silly thing.

Everyone I know wants to be the proud owner of soft, durable towels. Yet, most do not know how to ensure that those are what they buy. Leaving it to the touch test at the store does not make for satisfied buyers. You can be fooled by how they feel before having been washed, and it will tell you little about its quality level as well. Sounds to awful to be true, well here’s the scoop many towel manufacturers add a softener to the finish. Therefore, they feel super in the shop, and maybe even for the first few washes. After that, they may become nearly unrecognizable to the touch.

So what do you do to avoid this cover up? Check the labels of course. Look for one hundred percent combed cotton. This makes for a more absorbent, and stronger towel. And the process of combing the cotton will confirm that all of the short threads that you do not want have been taken out, and only the good ones left. Still, I know you will feel compelled to do the touch test, so while your at it keep the following in mind. If the towel feels heavier than you expected it to when you pick the entire thing up, then it is evidence that it is dense, and volume means absorbent. Oh and one last thing, you do have a responsibility to treat the towels right once they are your possessions, otherwise there is no insurance they will live up to your standards. Refresh your knowledge on how to properly care for your new towels, you will be ever so thankful you did every time you use them.

Well I admit it, I did just what those crafty marketing guys expected me to do. As soon as the sun came up on Jan 1st I raced out to buy a new book full of healthy recipes to kick start my resolution to become more clean and lean. Along with it came the need for a new blender, as smoothies are meant to become a staple in my quest.

Aside from making purchases, I actually have taken the time to read the books I bought. Let me share what I have learned about making smoothies. First, to uniformly cut everything inside the blender, it is best to add the ingredients in small quantities. Plus, it will help you avoid any overspills while doing the blending. It also is sensible to chill, or freeze ingredients prior to blending them, as this will keep the drink colder for longer. You know how a smoothie loses its appeal once it turns lukewarm.

Though you may not want to add an additional step to your smoothie process, it is always better to cut the fruit, or vegetables into pieces that are consistent with one another. It turns out nicer, and puts less strain on the motor. Oh, and most importantly, add the ice last.

While plenty of us wish we had walk in closets the size of a bedroom, with built in wardrobe organisation, we do not. Still, a life more organised is always preferable, as is a wardrobe. So here are couple of tips on how to make what little space you may have look its best, and work most efficiently.

First thing I ALWAYS tell people is to ditch those wire hangers from the dry cleaners, along with any that are one of a kind amidst the sea of hangers in the closet. The fastest way to bring some calm to such a place is to unify wherever possible. This means get matching hangers right now. I choose wooden ones, but they are not mandatory as I know plastic ones can be found for much more desirable pricing.

Next, though for years I followed the “if you have not worn it in a year remove it” rule, I now stand behind the “shop you closet” approach. Go through your clothing and accessories and confirm what you would buy again, and what you would not. Take out those items that would no longer make the cut. If they are staples, then you are deserving of a new model. Otherwise, if they are not, put them into storage and wait to see if you miss it in the season they fall within. If you do not, then off they go to someone who will give them the appreciation they deserve.

Nobody likes to be the person who is given a gift, but is empty handed when it comes to reciprocity. For some it happens yearly, for others more frequently, the answer is oh so simple. I adhere to a strick rule of having a whole shelf of emergency gifts, but I realise it is not truly necessary.

However, those emergency gifts have been my saving grace more times then I care to recall. For, I am the type of person that deplores being unprepared. So, here is a list of a few of the items I have on that shelf, feel free to follow suit: scented candles of varying sizes, a set of wine glasses, bags of specialty teas and cocoas, flavoured cooking oils in decorative containers. They are all appreciated by men and women alike, so I know I am always covered. The pricing range is good too, so I can exchange on the same financial level as the individual’s gift I received unexpectedly.

An air compressor is a device that converts power produced from an electrical, gas or diesel engine to compressed air that is released in quick bursts. Air compressors are used to run pneumatic tools, hobby and craft tools, car repair and industrial and construction applications. There are two main questions to ask in order to determine the type and size of the compressor needed to do the job:

1) Purpose

2) Power source

1. Purpose Determines CFM, PSI and Tank Size:

Knowing how an air compressor will be used is the most important question to answer because of its many uses. A compressor used in the home for hobbies or filling tires, balls, kiddie pools and other things around the house will require a small, portable model while a compressor used in manufacturing facilities is much more powerful and may be stationary.

The main purpose for compressors used in the home is to run pneumatic tools. These tools are more powerful, lighter in weight and will last longer than electric tools. The pneumatic tool’s air flow requirements are measured in cubic feet per minute (CFM). Nail guns and staple guns require less CFM than grinders and sprayers.

To determine the size of the compressor needed, add up the total CFM of all the pneumatic tools to be used at the same time and multiply that number by 20 percent. The compressor should deliver more CFM than what’s required.

While most pneumatic tools operate at 90 PSI (pound per square inch), some operate at a lower level PSI while others such as a sander or polisher operate at higher levels. Determine the highest PSI tool used and choose the compressor accordingly.

Tank size will determine how long the compressor can run without depleting the air. Tank size is commonly listed in gallons. If the compressor is used for only short bursts, a six gallon tank is sufficient. For longer, more concentrated usage, a 7 – 30 gallon tank is appropriate. For tools used for longer periods of time such as sanders, an even larger tank of 30 – 60 gallons is needed.

2. Power Source

Choosing a compressor powered by electricity will limit its portability since an electrical source is necessary. Electric air compressors are best used at home in a garage or workshop. Smaller compressors with less than a 30 gallon tank generally run on a home’s 120 volt, 15 amp source of power. Any compressor larger than 30 gallons needs more power to operate, or a 240 volt, single-phase power source.

A compressor powered by gasoline or diesel fuel can be used anywhere which makes this type of compressor suitable for construction and other outdoor use.

This article discussed the two main questions to ask when considering a compressor: the purpose which will determine the CFM, PSI and tank size and the power source to determine portability. In order to customise the choice of a compressor even more, the noise level, design (determines storage options) and maintenance are factors in choosing the correct compressor for the job.

In a living room curtains can bring a great deal of personalized style to the space, and in bathrooms the same can be said of shower curtains. I myself have become enamoured with some of the latest versions of both, and have taken it upon myself to share with you what I think are some of the most ingenious and intriguing curtains around.

I guess you could say I have sort of made a hobby out of searching for what I consider to be the most outrageous, and inspired curtains. It all came about quite by chance when I was doing an internet search for a particular shower curtain. What I was looking for was what I simply refer to as the pet shower curtain. If you have not seen this design yet, and have a pet, then this is definitely something you will want to investigate. It is a basic clear curtain, but it has gloved sleeves for the person washing their pet to insert their hands. These sleeves are extendable so that you can reach a pet of any height, and size. Well, let me correct that statement, any pet that can fit into a tub or shower that is. It is meant to make the process of bathing your creatures less messy, and safer than the normal tactics.

This brought me to a curtain that contains magnets at certain locations throughout it, which allow you to make different shapes with the curtain. All you have to do is either push the curtain in the direction of a magnet, or pull it away from a magnet to make the shape you want, and it stays that way till the next time you alter it. I might also mention that is quite a good looking curtain along with being inventive.

I then located some funny shower curtains that could be considered educational, if anyone were to actually read them. One is the map of the London Underground System. While you would have some difficulty trying to navigate through it while in the shower, it could prove to be quite handy at other times. But, I like it for its whimsy personally.

The last one to grab my attention was the periodic table of elements curtain. Now, I for one was not an over achiever when it came to memorising this thingamabob in school, but now that it is not being force on me I have a new found appreciation for it, and it makes me chuckle. But, I believe that any of these would actually be a good addition to a happy home, hanging from curtain poles. Needless to say there were tons more that I encountered, but they didn’t jump out at me in the same way that these did. As my journey continues, I promise to share what I find.

All too often, we focus so steadily on filling our homes with interesting art, and decorative pieces, but our gardens are left empty of these wonderful things. I notice this when visiting the outdoor space of friends and family frequently. Because I saw this in my own parent’s garden, I have consistently made an effort to do the opposite.

In fact, I have come up with what I believe to be the best of ideas when it comes to collecting artwork for a garden. I purchase things while on holiday, and trips. We are all familiar with finding regional items for sale that we love when visiting a place. However, more often than not once we get those keepsakes home we acknowledge that they clearly will not work in any room of our home.

Therefore, when travelling, I consciously buy souvenirs that are weather proof, weather resistant, or that I expect to weather well. Everyone that has been to my dwelling knows this about me, and more than a few have taken this idea on as their own.

To say it works out perfectly would be a bit misleading, for on occasion I have run into some difficulty with transporting a few of these objects via airplane. Still, I learned rather quickly to be more judicious with my selections. Now, I either limit myself to smallish metal works, wooden crafts or glass designs that I know can be brought on flights. Or, I ship them, and get the excitement of their arrival via courier once I have returned home.
